Hired heaters are therefore used instead, allowing the data centre’s air conditioning units (RACU) and cooling racks to be put through their paces. Tests are set up to monitor equipment performance and resilience, with data logging software being used to record test results.
Examples of Data Centre Failures
In August 2011, a major Primary Care software provider in the UK apologised “profusely” and launched a formal investigation after its data centre failed. The failure had a knock-on effect; a further 446 GP practices experienced system issues, according to the website ehealthinsider.
In perhaps the most widely reported data centre failure ‘case’ in recent years, millions of Blackberry users across Europe were unable to access their e-mail, instant messages or the internet in October 2011 due to a data centre problem that lasted at least six hours. The problems in the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East and Africa) were traced to a failure at a data centre in Slough.
In February this year (2012), a data centre in Erding, Germany, used by over 100 airlines experienced a failure that lasted three hours. Passengers were unable to self check-in online and reservation systems, agency bookings as well as airport counter systems were also affected.
These are just three examples of data centre failures that have suddenly occurred in recent years. Such failures can be costly both in monetary terms and also to a business’s reputation. Developing a customer-base can take years. Customers going elsewhere, due to losing faith in a service provider, can be disastrous, and can even result in business closure.
All this makes pre-operational testing of data centres cost-effective indeed. Important questions can be answered; not through utilising software solutions that generate advanced theoretical models on how air flow and heat output will be managed in a data centre, but through physical simulation using hired heaters: a truer substitute, without a doubt.

Metal inert gas welding or MIG welding is a more common reference for gas metal arc welding. MIG welding is a semi/fully automated arc welding process that uses an arc of electricity to create a short circuit between a consumable continuous wire electrode the anode and a cathode which is the metal being welded.
Equipment
MIG welding equipment includes; a welding gun that has a wire feed system, the wire electrode, shielding gas and a power supply.
Power supply
MIG welding uses mostly direct current; this is due to the fact that when the anode is positively charged it provides higher heat concentration thus making it more suitable for melting the wire electrode.
Shielding gas
It provides protection for the welding area from atmospheric gases which could lead to various defects such as porosity or fusion defects. There are some factors considered when choosing a shielding gas this includes, type of material to be weld. Pure inert gases used are helium and argon, carbon dioxide is mixed with argon in varying ratios this combination enhances the weld quality and minimizes mechanical property variations.
Metal transfer mode
The shielding gas forms the arc plasma, shields the molten weld pool and the arc, stabilize the arc on the metal being welded and it allows for a smooth transfer of the weld wire to the molten pool. The common methods of transfer are, short circuit transfer, globular transfer, and spray transfer. They vary on different levels; globular metal transfer produces a lot of heat and has a tendency of producing poor weld surfaces and spatter. It has a higher deposition rate and uses larger electrode wires but it is considered an economical method. In spray transfer the welding electrode metal passes through work piece and thus eliminating any spatter, this in turn gives a high quality weld. It is usually reserved for thick work pieces as it requires a large weld pool, being used on horizontal and flat welding surfaces. Short circuiting transfer, it requires lower current as compared to globular and thus the feed rate of the wire is lower this leads to a short circuit and its quick reversal at a rate of hundred times a second the result is a better weld and less spatter. It allows welding in almost any positions.
Welding operation
The operator guides the welding gun on the weld surface this should be at the recommended orientation and position, maintaining a consistent distance from the electrode tip to the work piece. The lead angle is usually dependant on the specifics of the weld but in most cases remains almost vertical to the surface.
Advantages of MIG welding
It has the ability to join a wide range of metals, due to its ability to vary some of its basics such as the metal transfer method different metals can be worked on and also with varying thickness.
Different welding positions, this enables you weld on any surface vertical, horizontal or inclined.
A good weld quality as one can reduce spatter, this results to smoother finishes which are especially critical for a finishing welds.
It is an easy process to learn as it is an automated process.
Disadvantages
It could prove to be difficult starting an arc especially for a beginner.
The use of inert gas makes this type of welding less portable as compared to arc welding process that do not require an external shielding gas.
