So the other day I decided to try out this audio amplifier kit. The idea was to end up with a fully functioning two channel amp, with indicator LEDs, a volume control and a standby switch.

The finished article configures at two times 38W. It’s linked to the SparkFun STA540 and the whole lot needed to be soldered – there wasn’t any pre-soldering done on the PCB. So first I put the amp on the board, and installed three resistors (1K), followed by five 10K resistors, two 47K resistors and two 100K resistors. In all cases I made sure the resistors were pushed all the way through the board and firmly soldered in place. When the solder is dry you can clip and trim it to make everything neat.

Then I installed the capacitors for the audio amplifier kit, and the standby switch. There are a few different capacitors that you need to put in. The standby switch has no polarity sensitivity.

The LEDs in the audio amplifier kit, on the other hand, do. Make sure you install them correctly or they won’t work. Remember – a flat bit on your LED, or one wire shorter than the other, are both indicative of the negative terminal.

After that came five screw terminals. Then the potentiometers. After that, the STA540 amplifier chip and the heat sink. As you’d expect, the amp chip and the heat sink were the most critical bit of the audio amplifier kit so I took my time. First applying heat sink compound to both parts and then securing them half tight with the bolt. Once you get the whole thing onto the board, the slack is taken up by the positioning of the heat sink and the amp in their holes – so you don’t want them mated too tight at first.

After putting in the stand offs and the screws, the audio amplifier kit was complete and all it needed was a quick test. That’s easy enough to do. Turn it on, move the potentiometers all the way round and measure the resistance. It should be around 9 and 10k on the left and right channels.
